Being an online English tutor has become one of the most popular work from home encore hustles. There is a great demand for teaching elementary school age children in Asia, and tens of thousands of English speakers in the US and Canada are going online to provide instruction.
While degreed teachers are preferred to provide instruction, especially with an ESL certificate, the demand is so great many online tutoring services will accept applicants with only a Bachelors degree. You do not have speak the native language of the students. The tutoring service will typically provide the lesson plans.
Other prerequisites include a computer, high speed internet, good headphones with a microphone and a video account, such as Skype. You must be willing to work hours that accommodate the schedules of students half way around the world, so that means providing lesson early in the morning or late at night.
The most well known ESL tutoring service, VIPKid, pays $20 per hour, which is about average for online ESL tutoring. There are over a hundred online ESL companies that are looking for English instructors and I would recommend checking out ESL Authority which provides information and links to these companies.
